Box Score 2 Fayetteville, N.C. - The Meredith softball program dropped their first USA South game of the year in a mid-week split at Methodist University on Wednesday afternoon. The Angels took game one 3-2 in dramatic fashion before falling 4-3 in game two at Price Field.
In game one, Meredith (15-11, 7-1 USA South) fell down 2-0 as Methodist (12-14, 3-5 USA South) struck first in the fourth inning.
The Avenging Angels were held scoreless until the offense came alive in the top of the sixth inning. Junior Mia Staggs led off with a single followed by a single from graduate student Alyssa Drake which moved Staggs to third. Drake stole second which gave junior Laura Tobin two runners in scoring position. Tobin lifted a sacrifice fly into left field scoring Staggs and earning an RBI.
The Monarchs also tried throwing Drake out at third after missing Staggs at home and threw it away which allowed the Angels to tie the game. With two outs, junior Savannah Talley doubled to left center followed by a single from Avery Puryear to give Meredith the lead.
Methodist had a runner on second in the bottom of the seventh with two outs. Sarah Manis, reigning USA South Player of the Week, fielded a single in center field and threw the runner out at home to earn the victory for the Angels. Manis also added two hits at the plate. Freshman Lillie Davis picked up her 10th win on the season in the circle.
The Monarchs flipped the script in game two as Meredith led 3-1 through four innings. Methodist scored three in the bottom of the fifth handing Meredith their first conference loss of the year.
Manis had another two-hit outing while Tobin also added two hits and another RBI. Freshman Emilee Lewis had two hits while Rheanne Burden drove in two runs with one hit. Senior Hannah Weigle struck out five in six innings of work.
Meredith is back on the road in USA South action this weekend when they travel to Greensboro College, on April 8th, with game one of the doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
