SALISBURY, Md. - The Meredith lacrosse team picked up its second NCAA Tournament win in program history taking down Washington & Jefferson 16-11 Saturday afternoon on the campus of Salisbury University. The Angels now lead the USA South in Tournament victories.

Both teams had to battle through very sloppy conditions on the turf of Sea Gull Stadium. USA South Rookie of the Year Reese Walker got the scoring started for the Angels three and a half minutes into the contest. Walker netted six assists and two goals while also tallying her 100th point on the season.

The Angels jumped out to a 4-1 lead before leading 5-3 at the end of the first quarter. Washington & Jefferson went on a 3-0 scoring run to tie the game 6-6 with 7:16 until halftime. That would be the last time the game was tied.

The Angels responded with back-to-back goals taking an 8-6 lead into the locker room. USA South Tournament MVP, junior Jessica Dowdy, scored both goals. Dowdy scored four while also adding six draw controls. 

A slow-paced third quarter saw Meredith take a three-goal lead into the final quarter of action where they outscored their opponent 6-4 to secure the victory and keep dancing.

Freshman Brooke Blades scored four goals on the afternoon, three coming in crunch time of the fourth quarter. Senior Kylie Phillips scored three goals and added four draw controls while fellow senior Tori Witmer found the back of the net twice. Sophomore Lauryn Turner scored one and scooped up four draw controls. 

Defensively, junior Madeline Horrell was a brick wall in the goal earning 13 saves. Also, seniors Meredith Sinkler and Izzy Steele combined for three caused turnovers to lead the back line of the Angels. 

The Angels will take on the host school, No. 4 Salisbury, tomorrow at 6 p.m. in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
