Box Score 2 RALEIGH, N.C. | Meredith Softball swept cross-town rivals William Peace at home on Saturday. The Avenging Angels took game one 12-2 and then won game two 4-3 to complete the sweep.
QUOTING HEAD COACH KIM SCAVONE:
"I am really proud of our effort today. Our defense was solid, and we kept pressure on them offensively every inning. Our team fought hard all day, and that resulted in many exciting two out rallies. Another great day in the circle for
Lillie Davis helped us secure the sweep."
GAME ONE:
The game began with a bang in the first inning, as William Peace's Cierra Lear hit a solo homer to give William Peace an early 1-0 lead. However, Meredith quickly responded in the bottom of the inning. A groundout by
Avery Puryear scored
Ashbee Standridge to tie the game at 1-1.
Meredith's offense exploded in the second and third innings. In the second, a single by
Emilee Lewis drove in a run, and later, Standridge's 2-RBI single pushed Meredith to a 4-1 lead. By the third inning, Meredith had seized control of the game with a total of six runs. Notable contributions came from
Savannah Talley (who singled in a run) and
Mia Staggs (who drove in two runs on a single). A huge 2-RBI homer by Standridge capped off the offensive barrage, putting Meredith ahead 10-1.
The damage continued in the fourth inning when Talley doubled, scoring a run to extend the lead to 11-1. William Peace managed one more run in the fifth as Adanya Day hit a solo home run, but it was too little, too late, as Meredith sealed the game with a 12-2 victory.
The key player of the game was Meredith's pitcher,
Lillie Davis. The junior right-hander delivered a dominant performance, pitching five innings and allowing only two hits and two earned runs while striking out three. Davis was in complete control throughout the game, managing to stifle the William Peace offense with efficiency.
On the offensive side for Meredith, Standridge led the way with a 3-for-3 performance, including a home run and 5 RBIs.
Emilee Lewis also contributed to the offensive surge with a pair of hits and 2 RBIs.
Despite the loss, Lear of William Peace provided a bright spot with her first-inning homer, while Day added a solo shot in the fifth. However, the William Peace offense struggled against Davis' pitching, managing only two hits in the game.
GAME TWO:
William Peace took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. The first run came from a double by Day, which drove in Kinley Jordan, and the second run came on a sac fly by Reagan Stewart, allowing Lear to score. The visitors looked poised to extend their lead, but Meredith quickly responded in the bottom of the second inning.
Sarah Manis came home on an RBI single from
Lillie Davis, cutting the deficit to 2-1.
Meredith's offense came alive in the third inning, taking a 3-2 lead. A timely double by Puryear brought home Standridge Lewis to give Meredith its first lead of the game. However, William Peace wasn't going down without a fight. In the sixth inning, Jordan crossed the plate after a sac fly by Stewart, tying the game at 3-3.
With the game on the line, Meredith scored the decisive run in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Laycie Eastwood, who had entered as a pinch runner, came in to score on a groundout by Manis, giving Meredith the 4-3 lead. Despite a valiant effort by William Peace to rally, Meredith held on to secure the hard-fought victory.
Kaylee Manning, earned the win to improve to 5-6 on the season. Manning pitched 3.2 innings, allowing just 3 hits and 2 earned runs while striking out two. She was followed by
Lillie Davis, who picked up the save with 3.1 strong innings of work. Davis allowed only 2 hits and 1 earned run, striking out 2 and keeping the William Peace offense at bay in the final stages of the game.
For William Peace, Kimberly Bordeaux pitched a complete game, going 6 innings and allowing 4 earned runs on 7 hits. Bordeaux's performance, though solid, was ultimately not enough to hold off Meredith's resilient offense.
At the plate, Puryear and Manis contributed key RBIs for Meredith, while Caroline Burdsal and Day led the way for William Peace, both collecting multiple hits in the game.
