Three School Records Fall at the Liberty Open

Lynchburg, VA - The Meredith College Avenging Angels traveled to Liberty University for the Liberty Open. The meet was highlighted by school records, personal bests, and competitive depth across sprints, distance, hurdles, jumps, and throws.

Sprints: Meredith was led in the women's 200 meters by junior Abrianna Casarez, who clocked 27.21. She was closely followed by sophomore Abigail Clayton in 27.59, with juniors Natasha Elder (29.20) and freshman Angel Southerland (29.75) rounding out the group.

Casarez, Clayton, and Elder doubled in the 400 meters. Casarez crossed in 1:02.38, just ahead of Clayton's 1:02.47. Elder added another solid performance with a time of 1:05.40, showcasing Meredith's strength in the one-lap event.

Distance: In the women's mile, junior Carly O'Toole led the Angels with a time of 5:42.93, followed by freshmen Abigail Davis (5:46.55) and Madison Moyer (6:01.85).

The highlight on the track came in the 5,000 meters. Junior standout Delaney Bundy finished 5th in the invitational section with an impressive 18:13.84, continuing her strong season. In the open section, freshman Juana Silva Jimenez earned a podium finish, placing 3rd in 19:03.28, while senior Laura Brown battled to a 12th-place finish in 21:24.00.

In the 60-meter hurdles preliminaries, where sophomore Avery McMillan broke the indoor school record, running 10.88. Sophomore Ellie-Reed Zimmerman (11.59) and freshman Arianna Vangelder (11.97).

More records fell in the field events. Freshman Jane Gray Zechini cleared 2.86 meters (9'4.5") in the pole vault, setting a new indoor school record and finishing fourth overall.

In the throws, sophomore Bryanna Herring continued her dominant indoor campaign by breaking her own school record in the weight throw, launching a massive 16.19 meters (53'1.5") to place 10th. She also competed in the shot put alongside freshman Jamie Cornatzer and Finley Sparks. Junior Athena Mowatt led the Angels in the main circle shot put with a mark of 10.31 meters (33'10").

Additional field contributions came from sophomore Halona Bryant in the long jump with a mark of 4.36 meters (14'3.75").

Head Coach Field Miller on the day: "We are in the grind of training, had some adjustments this week to the schedule based on the impact of weather but this group is working hard and seeing their progress happen. Excited for the next few weeks."

The Angels return to action on January 30th and 31st at the Bast-Cregger Invitational hosted by Roanoke College in Salem, Virginia.
