Lexington, VA - The Indoor Track & Field team had a big day at the VMI Winter Classic. The Avenging Angels finished 4
th in team scores behind team standing winner Appalachian State University. Three school records were broken and a plethora of personal records.
Freshman
Angel Southerland led the way in the 60 meters, clocking 8.64 in the preliminaries, while
Abigail Clayton continued a strong indoor season with a 15
th place finish(26.90) in the 200 meters — the top Meredith finish in the event. Close behind her was teammate
Abrianna Casarez (27.08, 17
th). Meredith had four athletes finish within the top 15 in the 60-meter hurdles, led by
Avery McMillan (9
th, 10.62, School Record),
Halona Bryant (10
th, 10.66), and
Abrianna Casarez (11
th, 10.67) giving Meredith multiple strong sprint performances.
In the 400 meters, Clayton posted a season-best 1:00.14(8
th), with Casarez (1:01.90, 13th),
Natasha Elder (1:04.98, 15th), and freshman
Emma Jolliff (1:06.89, 20th).
The Avenging Angels shined in the distance events.
Carly O'Toole led the 800 meters with a strong 2:30.75(8
th).Junior standout
Delaney Bundy delivered two major performances — finishing fifth in the mile (5:25.72) and taking third in the 5,000 meters (17:52.29).
Juana Silva Jimenez had a great double of her own finishing sixth in the 5,000 meters (18:17.87) and third in the 3,000 meters(10:42.34). Freshman
Abigail Davis also dipped under 19 minutes in the 5K, running 18:58.39.
Meredith had four athletes finish within the top 15 in the 60-meter hurdles, led by
Avery McMillan (9
th, 10.62),
Halona Bryant (10
th, 10.66), and
Abrianna Casarez (11
th, 10.67).
Relays had a strong day as well as Freshman
Kaia Ramsey, Elder,
Caitlin Brown, and O'Toole, finished 2
nd in the Distance Medley Relay in 14:12.03. The 4x400 meter relay ended the day on the track for the Angels as Elder, O'Toole, Casarez, and Clayton passed the baton around for second place in a time of 4:13.81.
Sophomore
Bryanna Herring stole the show in the weight throw, claiming first place with a massive school record 16.30 meters (53'5.75"), continuing her dominant indoor campaign. Freshman
Jamie Cornatzer added her own strong day finishing seventh-place with 13.39 meters(7
th).
In the shot put, junior
Athena Mowatt led Meredith with a school record of her own, 11.29 meters(9
th), followed closely by Cornatzer at 10.92 meters(10
th).
Head Coach
Field Miller on the day, "The group came to compete today, we looked sharp and are peaking at the right time as we prepare for the conference championships in two weeks. 3 school records and 18 personal bests should be a great indicator we are primed and ready. Very proud of the hard work this team is putting in."
The Avenging Angels will look to carry this energy into their next indoor meet as they compete at the 2026 USA South Indoor Track & Field Conference Championships at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, North Carolina on February 27
th.
