Basketball Loses Close One on Senior Night

Raleigh, N.C. – Meredith and Peace met for the 29th time in the cross town series on Wednesday night on the Avenging Angel's Senior Night. The Pacers won a battle 63-59. Meredith honored their three senior players, Brittney Cornelius, Hunter Johnson and Kourtney Barnes in a pregame ceremony.

Meredith (6-13, 5-9 USA South) and Peace (8-13, 4-11) played a tight game. Meredith held a 12 point lead with 12:55 remaining in the first half. The Pacers cut the lead to one and the Avenging Angels pushed it back to six to lead 37-31 at the half.

The Avenging Angels pushed it back to a 10 point lead and the Pacers closed the gap, gaining their first lead of the game with 3:35 left in the second half. Peace would not lose the lead and cruise to the season sweep of Meredith.

The Avenging Angels were led by Megan Rahn with 24 points and nine rebounds. The senior duo played their hearts out with Cornelius gaining a double-double of 14 points and 14 rebounds. Johnson has six points and eight rebounds.

Meredith next travels to take on nationally ranked #9 Christopher Newport in a conference matchup on Saturday at 2 p.m.

Meredith Senior Class
Cornelius is currently Meredith's third all time leading scorer and has been named to several USA South All-Conference and North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association teams. Cornelius is a scholar athlete and honor student who also serves as the President of Meredith's Student Athlete Advisory Committee, member of Silver Shield Leadership Society, Pi Mu Epsilon, Alpha Lamda Delta, Delta Mu Delta, Pi Mu Epsilon, Kappa Nu Sigma and is active in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Johnson joined the Avenging Angels in 2006, steadily improving her game throughout her career and always serving as an ambassador to the basketball program and to Meredith College. She has been named twice as Meredith's representative on the USA South Sportsmanship team. Johnson, a scholar athlete and honor student, has been very active on many fronts – as member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Campus Crusade for Christ, Kappa Nu Sigma, Alpha Lambda Delta, Tri Beta, and Silver Shield.

Barnes is a graduate of Enloe High School in Raleigh, NC. Kourtney joined the Avenging Angels in 2008 as a transfer student from Louisburg College. While only a member of the basketball team for a year and a half, she came on to make strong contributions to the team, especially this fall in the team's early success against USA South Conference opponents.
