Meredith Drops Two at Home

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

RALEIGH, N.C. - Meredith took a two-match hit to their conference record today with sweeps from Maryville and Averett. The Maryville Scots earned a third place spot among conference foes with a 3-0 win over Averett in the second match on the day.

The athletic Maryville team wasted no time setting the tone in Weatherspoon Gym today jumping out to an 11-4 lead in the first set versus Meredith. Senior Scot Teri Lind tallied two of her four damaging kills at the setter spot during the run.

Freshman Angel Emily Hendricks delivered back-to-back blows to interrupt the Scots. But a 12-1 run Maryville run gave the visitors a commanding lead at 23-7.

Molly Markley teamed up with Sarah Brandon and Cori Spadefor a trio of stuffs before the Scots finished off the Avenging Angels 25-13.

Markley drove down a pair of kills and picked up Clarke Glendenning for a block to open set two 3-0. Meredith charged ahead to an 8-3 lead before Maryville's Mallory Bonee uncorked three of her 11 aces to even the score at 8-8.

Freshman Jasmine Aguinaldo and junior Anna Hayes knocked down a couple of kills from Glendenning during a 9-2 Scots run forcing Meredith Head Coach Fiona Barkley to whistle for her first timeout.

The Avenging Angels heeded her call for action and unleashed a 9-1 run of their own capped off by four consecutive winners from freshman server Carla Lunday. With Meredith back on top, Scots coach Kandis Schram brought her team to the bench for a talk.

Maryville came out of the timeout firing off a kill from Jaclyn Stephens. The Avenging Angels notched a pair of points before the Scots cruised past Meredith to a 25-21 win and a 2-0 match lead.

The third set remained close until the end with each team sharing the score on nine occasions before Maryville finished off the Avenging Angels 25-22 for the win.

After a break, Meredith returned to the action to face Averett University in the nightcap. In a competitive battle amongst conference foes, the Avenging Angels held on to the lead until six unanswered points from the Cougars put the visitors on top 13-10.

Meredith capitalized on a misstep from AU's frontline to tie the score at 15 and eventually take over the lead 18-16 on a pair of Markley kills.

The teams would even the score on four more occasions before Averett secured a 25-23 set win for a 1-0 lead in the match.

Set two was a bit more defined by the AU offensive pressure with six kills apiece from Allison Sparks and Brooke Hensley. Hensley served out the 25-12 set victory with six consecutive winners to give her team a 2-0 advantage.

After Averett opened set three with a 5-1 lead, Markley sparked her fellow Angels on a 7-0 run to edge past the Cougars 8-5. Meredith extended their lead to six on a pair of Markley block assists with Hayes and Spade.

Averett pulled to within two on an unfortunate combination of Meredith errors. But the Avenging Angels pushed out of the rut to drive their lead back up to seven at 21-14.

Youthful mistakes from the young Meredith squad sent the Cougars on an eight-point run and the eventual 26-24 advantage for a match victory.

Markley led the day for the Avenging Angels with 17 kills and nine blocks. Hendricks tallied 16 blasts on the day, and Baughman dished out 30 assists to lead her team. Freshman libero Ally White posted 44 digs in the 0-2 finish.

The Avenging Angels travel to nearby N.C. Wesleyan for a 7 p.m. battle next Wednesday, October 17. Meredith will attempt to even the series with the Bishops after losing 3-1 in a non-conference pairing earlier in the season.
