Box Score GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Quakers of Guilford College held just a four-point lead with 13:25 remaining in regulation before settling in for a 71-56 non-conference win over visiting Meredith College. GC improved to 4-1 with the win, while the Avenging Angels slipped to 1-2 early in the season.
Meredith opened the game with a 10-3 lead forcing Head Quaker Coach Stephanie Flamini to whistle for an early timeout at 16:30. The Quakers settled during the break and used a 15-0 run to edge past the Avenging Angels for the lead.
MC ended the blitz on a pair of free throws from junior Kristen Alford, but the team would not score another field goal until Rah'nika Jones rolled one in at 6:38.
Guilford maintained the offensive pressure when Morgan King completed a three-point-play to extend the Quaker lead to eight.
Jones drew a charge with just four minutes remaining in regulation, and Tyler Gresham followed up with a bucket in the paint. Gresham drilled another jumper in the next series to pull the Avenging Angels to within two with just under three minutes left in the period.
On the throw-in Gresham forced Guilford to foul in the backcourt to give Meredith the ball back for a quick jumper from Alford to tie the game. The Meredith defense kept the Quaker shooters from reaching the net to carry a four-point lead into the locker room at the half.
The teams remained close during the opening minutes of the second frame when GC's Gabby Oglesby picked up an offensive rebound to give her team a three-point advantage at 15:08.
Meredith's Danielle Lee grabbed an offensive board after a missed Angel jumper, and Kim Hinton scored on the put-back to cut the lead to one.
Oglesby dropped in a short jumper the next time down the floor, and the Quakers followed up with a pair of free throws after a Meredith turnover to maintain an edge.
The teams exchanged buckets during the next several plays to hold the Guilford lead at seven at the 11 minute mark.
Keyanka Bailey subbed in and launched a long two-point jumper to pull her team to within five, but two quick fouls put GC back at the line for the advantage. Bailey kept Meredith in the mix before an unforced error gave Payne the ball back for the hosts first double-digit lead at 9:45.
Lee made a strong move to the basket on the next possession and pitched in a pair from the stripe to drop the lead to eight.
Quickly down by 12 on second-chance opportunities and a backdoor layup from Guilford led Meredith to call for a timeout at 8:18.
Bailey helped her team maintain composure and continued to pressure on the offensive end with Lee fighting for rebounds, but the seasoned Guilford squad began to pull away from the Avenging Angels.
Guilford's Brittany Atwater swished one from behind the arc with just over five minutes remaining in regulation to extend the Quaker advantage to 16.
Meredith continued to battle but would not recover as GC cruised to a 15-point victory.
Bailey finished with 14 points to lead Meredith, adding seven rebounds and one steal. Alford and Gresham posted a dozen apiece with Lee adding a game-high 11 rebounds. Freshman Laquetta Hairston tallied seven assists for the second consecutive game, adding six rebounds and a steal in the loss.
Five Quakers finished the win with double-digit scoring, including Atwater and King with 14 apiece. The team totaled just nine turnovers during the game.
The Avenging Angels open the USA South Conference schedule Saturday, December 8, at Ferrum College. Tipoff with the Panthers is slated for 2 p.m. in Virginia.
