Box Score RALEIGH, N.C. - The visiting Lynchburg College Hornets took care of business in Raleigh Saturday with an 83-65 non-league win over the Meredith College basketball team. The Hornets shot nearly 50-percent from the floor to finish off Meredith at home.
Down by nine at the 15-minute mark, Kim Hinton completed a pass from McKenzi Edwards to launch an 8-1 Meredith run. Edwards forced another Hornet turnover and went on to pull Meredith to within two at 13:07.
Thanks to the unbridled rebounding effort from Lynchburg's Chaney Forbush, the Hornets pulled away once again to hold a 14-point lead over Meredith with just 2:19 remaining in the first period.
The Avenging Angels hit five-of-six free throws and Rah-nika Jones scored down low on a pass from rookie Jessis Hayes to cut Meredith's deficit in half going into the break.
Keyanka Bailey and Hinton scored a pair of jumpers to excite the Meredith crowd in the opening minutes of the second half, but Forbush squelched the home momentum. She contributed seven of the next 14 Lynchburg points as the Hornets surged ahead to a 56-38 advantage with 14 minutes left on the clock.
The Meredith offense went cold and the team turned the ball over on four occasions to help the Hornets on a 9-0 run that would give the visitor's their largest lead of the game at 25.
With help from a series of Lynchburg missteps, the Avenging Angels put together an 11-2 run of their own. But Katie Reeves drilled one of seven Hornet threes to keep Meredith at bay with just under seven minutes remaining in regulation.
The Avenging Angels continued to battle but would not reach any closer than 18 the rest of the way.
Edwards led Meredith with 17 points, adding four steals and five boards. Hayes dropped in a career-high 11 and picked up a pair of steals, and fellow freshman Asia Milton led the Angels with four assists. Hinton and Raven Gregory wrangled six rebounds apiece, and Hinton tallied eight points in the loss.
Three Hornets finished the day in double-figures, led by Forbush with 20 points and an impressive 19 boards. Charmaine Hairston added 18 and Shannon Allan contributed 16 with five steals.
With Thanksgiving week off the Avenging Angels return to the hardwood December 3 for the first of two contests before winter break. Hollins University hosts Meredith in a 7 p.m. midweek event on the third. The Avenging Angels cap off exam week playing host to Randolph College Friday, December 13.
