Box Score ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - Avenging Angel McKenzie Edwards knocked down the game-winning jumper at the buzzer to give Meredith College a 69-67 victory over N.C. Wesleyan in USA South action Wednesday evening.
The win moved both teams into a tie for fourth in the USA South's North division with a record of 2-3 (4-7 overall).
The score remained close much of the way with the hosts in the lead by one at 14:03 on the first-of-four three-pointers from high scorer Kenyata Harris.
During the next 3:25 the Avenging Angels put together a 12-2 run capped off with a layup from Meredith's leading scorer Keyanka Bailey to take hold of the game with a nine-point advantage.
Harris drilled two more threes to help pull the Bishops back to even with 5:21 remaining in the first period.
Wesleyan bobbled an offensive rebound and rookie Asia Milton scored a layup on the next play to jumpstart Meredith's final push toward a six-point advantage at the break.
Midway through the second period, N.C. Wesleyan secured their largest lead of the game on back-to-back jumpers from Jaleesa Honesty and Harris.
But Meredith remained focused and put together one final 12-2 run for a six-point advantage with just under five minutes remaining in regulation.
The Bishops made quick work of the deficit thanks to three-pointers from Shanice Goree and Kourtney Salisbury. The buckets put N.C. Wesleyan ahead by two-points with just 54 seconds left on the clock.
Brittaney Rice drilled a pair of free throws the next time down the floor to reset the game for the tenth time of the night with :26 remaining.
N.C. Wesleyan missed a chance to take the lead after a Meredith foul, and the Avenging Angels whistled for a timeout to set up for Edwards' finish.
Edwards recorded 13 points, four rebounds and a steal, and Bailey posted a team-high 20 points, four assists. Rah'nika Jones pitched in 10 from inside and Tyler Gresham led with nine boards.
Harris topped all with 28 points and nine rebounds for the Bishops.
Meredith hosts a USA South doubleheader this weekend beginning with a 7:30 p.m. tip-off Friday night versus Maryville College. The Covenant Scots arrive Saturday in time for a 2 p.m. contest.
