Box Score MARTINSVILLE, N.C. - The North's top-seeded Meredith College volleyball squad swept the North's fourth-seeded William Peace Pacers to advance to Saturday's 2 p.m. semifinal round. The South's number-one seeded Maryville will face the North's second-seeded Averett Cougars in the first semifinal pairing at Noon. The USA South Volleyball Championship match will begin at 6 p.m.
Friday's 3-0 win over William Peace completed the Avenging Angels' series sweep over the cross-town rival. The All-Conference Angels led the offensive battle to take down WPU.
Karlie Long led with 11 kills, eight digs and seven service aces, and Elizabeth Pattison landed eight winners from the right side. Rookie setter Hannah Blaylock dished out a match-high 28 assists to go along with a team-high nine digs. Middles Alex Hafliger and Jasmine Aguinaldo combined for 11 kills, four blocks, and Emily Hendricks landed four kills from the outside to lead Meredith to victory.
MCVB opened the match with a two-point lead before giving up three points on unforced errors to help Peace to a 4-2 advantage.
But a winner from Long gave the ball to Blaylock who served Meredith to a 7-4 advantage, and the Avenging Angels never looked back.
WPU stuffed two attempts from Meredith's front row, before Long landed a kill followed by back-to-back-to-back aces to widen the gap to five. The Angels cruised to a 10-point advantage with five consecutive winners before finishing off the Pacers for good.
WPU came out strong in the second frame to hold a 7-4 lead, but a trio of kills from Long, Pattison and Hendricks shifted the momentum back in favor of Meredith. Long ripped two more service aces as the Angels reclaimed the lead and pushed the advantage to four at 12-8.
Meredith's offense continued to pressure William Peace, and an Emery McGee service ace forced the Pacers to call for a break in the action.
WPU scored five of the next six points to pull to within three, but a flurry of unforced errors helped Meredith to a 2-0 match lead.
The Avenging Angels cruised to a 13-5 advantage in the third frame, extending the lead to double-digits with ease.
Holding onto a 22-10 advantage, Meredith allowed the Pacers to score four consecutive points, but Head Coach Fiona Barkley called for a timeout to settle her squad. Hendricks landed a kill from the corner to secure Meredith's spot in Saturday's USA South semifinals for the first time since joining the league in 2007.
