Soccer Extends Streak with 8-0 Shutout Over Pacers

Box Score

RALEIGH, N.C. - The Meredith College soccer team maintained their perfect USA South Conference record with an 8-0 shutout over the visiting William Peace Pacers Sunday. Seven Avenging Angels scored in the win, including Meredith McCarty who led with five points on the day.

As part of today's annual Kick Cancer event, Meredith Assistant Coach Ashley Riggs offered participants and fans a testimonial of her battle with breast cancer. She urged those present to listen to their bodies, seek medical advice, and take advantage of preventive care standards.

Less than 11 minutes into the match, Cassie Padilla scored the eventual gamewinner with a header off a McCarty corner to jumpstart the day's scoring.

The next three goals occurred during a 1:41 segment beginning with a free kick from Megan Luke that sailed into the top left corner of the box just beyond reach of the WPU keeper. McCarty's first score came next, followed by a goal from Meghan Ingram that grazed the post on the way to the net.

Celena Greer dribbled past the defense in the 34th minute to find the net from 10 yards out, and McCarty carried the ball in from the midfield to close out the half.

After the break Ellice Johnson scored her second goal on the season with a direct shot five yards from the box. In the 84th minute, Emily Spink passed ahead to Greer who lobbed the ball over the head of the Peace goalie to end the scoring on the day.

Jaisa Loch, recorded 45 minutes in goal, and Brooke Verburg split the second period with Kat Pike to defend the box for the Angels.

Pacer Brittany Bolin took the loss in goal for the visitors with seven saves, and Shannon Maddex recorded eight saves in the second period.

Meredith hosts USA South foe Methodist Wednesday evening in a 6 p.m. match. Fifteen minutes before the first kick, Conference Commissioner Rita Wiggs will be on site to present the Avenging Angels with the 2015 USA South Women's President's Cup. Meredith earned the award during the 2014-15 year.
