Soccer Downs Methodist 1-0 to Remain Perfect in USA South; President's Cup Presented

Box Score

RALEIGH, N.C. - The Meredith College Avenging Angels held on to win their most physical match of the year 1-0 over Methodist University in USA South action Wednesday night. Meredith's defense came to play as senior defender Megan Luke and goalie Jaisa Loch played a vital role in preserving the win. Freshman Celena Greer broke the deadlock in the 35th minute when she beat the outstretched Monarch goalie to put the Angels ahead for good.

The first half began in a physical struggle that set the tone for the rest of the match. The Angels defense held strong as they dealt with the tenacious Monarch attack led by Capri Clark. Luke, Kirstie King, Kaitlyn Peeples, and Olivia DeBellis did not bend as the Monarchs failed to convert on any of their four shots on goal.

The Meredith offense took a while to get started as they fought to find a way through a tough Methodist defense. The Monarchs held on strong as multiple through passes missed their mark to end up in the hands of MU keeper Taylor Ross until Greer's shot found its way to the corner of the pocket.

The second half continued in the same physical manner. Loch played brilliantly in goal as she turned away the Monarch attack time and time again. Methodist's attack grew stronger as the match went on as Taylor Cavazos and Clark pressured the Angels defense. Meredith's defense prevailed to hold out for the win.

The Monarchs outshot Meredith 25-9 and took four corner kicks to two for the Angels. Meredith's defense has been on display as the team has only allowed one goal in the last six games.

Loch recorded her tenth win of the season in goal with eight saves, and Ross took the loss for the Monarchs as she tallied seven saves in goal.

Just prior to today's match, USA South Commissioner Rita Wiggs presented Meredith with the 2015 USA South Women's President's Cup. Last April, Meredith became the first-ever single gender member to receive this award. Vice President of College Programs Jean Jackson and Athletic Director Jackie Myers accepted the award. Alex Holmes, chair of the Meredith Board of Trustees, joined in the celebration, along with a host of student-athletes, coaches, and staff.

Meredith returns to action this Saturday as they host Averett University at 2 p.m. Follow the action live HERE.
