Box Score Raleigh, N.C. -- The Meredith College volleyball team managed to slip past a prepared N.C. Wesleyan squad 3-2 (25-27, 25-10, 18-25, 15-10) thanks to a career-high 15 kills from Jasmine Aguinaldo. Seniors Aguinaldo, April Hausler, Emily Hendricks, and Sarah Brandon were recognized before the match.
After the Bishops tied the first set 7-7, Aguinaldo put MCVB back on track with a quick attack in the middle to edge back into the lead 8-7. She followed with a pair of service aces, and Hendricks ripped a ball from the outside to continue the run.
The success was short lived as Wesleyan scored the next three points and went on to eventually tie the game at 15s.
A four-point rally with a pair of Aguinaldo winners moved Meredith back in front, but the offense began to falter as the team struggled to find a rhythm. The Bishops finished the set hitting .469 to take a 1-0 match advantage.
With a break in the action, Meredith regrouped allowing Wesleyan to score just 10 points in set two.
Meredith carried the momentum into the third stanza and held an early 6-2 lead, but Bishops Ayla Brewer and Emily McLain led the visitors on an 8-2 run to retake the lead. The rally threw MCVB off balance as the Angels soon trailed 16-13.
A well-timed second ball attack from Hannah Blaylock gave the serve back to the Angels, and a misplaced pass from the Bishops kept the run alive. Brandon created a point on the right side, and a Blaylock service winner put Meredith back in the lead 17-16.
But a trio of unforced errors landed Meredith in a losing battle that left the Angels down 2-1.
MCVB responded scoring four of the first five points in the fourth set, but a relentless Bishops squad would not quit. Wesleyan continued to pressure Meredith's defense as the visitors moved back in front 18-17.
But Alex Hafliger opened up the front line attack for Meredith on the next ball. Elizabeth Pattison stopped an attack and paired up with Hafliger to stuff another Bishops' attempt to give the Angels a lift.
At 22-18 Meredith served the ball into the net, but Hafliger picked up her teammate with a blast on the next ball. Consecutive miscues from the Bishops handed Meredith the win to tie the match and force a deciding set.
Hafliger and Pattison continued to swing, and Hendricks and Aguinaldo chimed in down the stretch to pull off a five-set victory.
Karlie Long tallied 14 kills, and Hafliger finished with 11 kills, three stuffs. Hendricks and Pattison combined for 15 kills, and Blaylock dished out a match-high 56 assists. Emery McGee recorded 11 digs with Long and Karlie Michalina adding nine apiece.
Wesleyan's Torie Stewart and Taylor Smith combined for 25 Bishop kills, and Christina Huber led all with 22 digs.
Meredith hosts a USA South play day Saturday with Piedmont and Methodist. The Angels will play the first and third matches beginning at 11 a.m. in Weatherspoon Gymnasium.
The team's efforts to raise funds and awareness to end breast cancer continues this weekend with more raffle prizes available. MCVB's official Dig Pink game will be held next Saturday, Oct. 31.
