Box Score GREENSBORO, N.C. - A six-point first half advantage would not hold as the host Greensboro Pride finished off Meredith College 62-54 in Friday's USA South women's basketball action. Laquetta Hairston led the Angels with 11 points.
Meredith finally broke through the rim to put the first two points on the scoreboard for any team at 16:36. The Avenging Angels used the break in offense to extend their lead 10-3 through the next five minutes of play.
The games leading scorer Joslyn Spires scored six of the next nine to give the hosts a two-point lead, but Meredith rookie Chandler Hines drained a three to steal it back for the Angels.
Rookies Stephanie Girard and Gabi Jessup joined the effort, each hitting one from behind the arc, as Meredith continued to push against the North division leader.
The Angels would score the next 14-of-18 to hold a nine-point advantage with just under two minutes to play in the first period.
Danielle Lee forced a Greensboro turnover on the next play, but the Angels missed the opportunity to score. The Pride managed to cut their deficit to just six heading into the locker room for the intermission.
Greensboro maintained the momentum and put together a 7-2 run in the opening 1:32 of the second stanza to quickly cut Meredith's lead to just one point.
During the next eight minutes, the Pride managed to score twice for each of Meredith's baskets as Greensboro slipped ahead 47-40.
Jessup knocked down a pair of buckets from beyond the arc during the next minute and one half to give the Angels a boost, but Meredith continued to trail by four at 6:35.
Hairston drained her second three of the night and hit a pair from the stripe, but Greensboro remained poised and in control the rest of the way.
Kim Hinton recorded the night's only double-double with 10 points, 10 boards, and Jessup finished with nine points. Lee tallied eight rebounds and four steals in the loss.
Spires notched 18 for the Pride, and Tiffani Stephens finished with 11 points.
Meredith will take Saturday off before traveling to Averett University Sunday afternoon for the final regular season game. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m. in the Grant Center.
