Box Score 2 GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Meredith College volleyball team maintained a perfect USA South record Saturday after sweeping both Mary Baldwin (25-8, 25-17, 25-17) and Greensboro (25-14, 25-18, 25-21) in a conference play day. Karlie Long and Emily Hendricks led both matches with double-digit efforts from the outside.
The Avenging Angels cruised past the Fighting Squirrels to take a 1-0 match lead and hit .619 in the second frame to extend the advantage. MBC battled in the third set to hold an early 6-4 lead, but Karlee Michalina landed three service aces in a 5-0 run to put Meredith back in front for good.
After a two-match break, MCVB stepped back on the court to face the Pride. Long and Hendricks continued to pound the ball from the outside preventing any momentum from Greensboro.
With a two-set advantage, Meredith continued to push with an early 5-2 lead in the third stanza. The Pride picked up a couple of winners to move past the Angels, but Katie Keen dished out a pair of assists, and Jessica Goodwin served up a winner to put Meredith back in front 8-6.
The Angels relaxed a bit and gave up three consecutive points on unforced errors to let Greensboro retake the lead, but a kill from Hendricks and a service ace from Keegan Lynch settled Meredith back into a rhythm. The Pride hung around the rest of the set but gave up the match on back-to-back miscues to leave Meredith with the victory in straight sets.
Long tallied 26 kills on the day, and Hendricks recorded 10 in each win. Keen combined for 26 assists, and Hannah Blalock posted 30 on the day. Several defensive specialists contributed to Meredith's wins, including Emery McGee with 16 digs, Lynch and Goodwin with nine apiece, and Michalina notched six versus the Pride.
The Avenging Angels travel to N.C. Wesleyan Tuesday evening for a 7 p.m. pairing and will travel to Averett next weekend to face the Cougars and Ferrum in more conference action.
