Box Score RALEIGH, N.C. - In Tuesday's season opener the Meredith College volleyball team held off a third-set surge from the visiting St. Andrews Knights to claim a 3-1 victory (25-19, 26-24, 27-29, 25-17). Karlie Long led all with 15 kills, and Alex Hafliger notched 10 from the middle to give the Angels an edge.
Katie Keen served Meredith in a five-point rally to surge ahead 20-12 in set one for the eventual 1-0 match lead.
St. Andrews held a four-point lead in the second stanza forcing Head Meredith Coach Fiona Barkley to call for a break in the action. The strategy worked as Jasmine Aguinaldo landed a winner from the middle on the next play. Meredith scored six of the next eight points to edge past the visitors 15-14.
A pair of Angel errors evened the scores at 16 before Meredith put together a three-point series to move ahead. MCVB held on to the lead before SAU's Lindsey Wagner interrupted the drive with a winner at the net.
Two unforced errors left Meredith vulnerable, but the Angels finished off the Knights on back-to-back kills from Long and Hafliger.
St. Andrews edged Meredith in the third set before the Angels claimed the match on a steady fourth-set finish.
Emery McGee gathered 21 digs and Hannah Blaylock tallied 25 assists, eight digs. Keen added 16 assists and a trio of digs for the Angels. Keegan Lynch served up four winners, and Emily Hendricks and Aguinaldo combined for 14 kills.
Tess Smith led the Knights with 14 kills, and Jaden Lynch boasted a match-high 31 assists.
