NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Meredith College volleyball team split in Saturday's action at the Captain's Classic. After a 3-0 (25-16, 25-17, 25-16) loss to the University of Mary Washington, the Avenging Angels swept Bridgewater (25-17, 25-20, 25-21).

Karlie Long led the Angels with 19 kills, adding 10 digs, and Emily Hendricks knocked down 16 kills from the outside pin. Elizabeth Pattison tallied three kills in the loss to UMW and posted six winners from the right side in the win over Bridgewater with five blocks on the day. Jasmine Aguinaldo notched five blocks, adding seven kills from the middle.

In set one versus Mary Washington, the Angels battled back from an 18-9 deficit to pull to within three points at 20-17. But the Eagles cruised to a win scoring the next five points.

UMW used their momentum to jump out front 11-4 in the second frame. Meredith could not find a rhythm during the next series of points and remained behind seven points at 16-9.

An unforced error by the Eagles gave the ball to Keegan Lynch for the serve. She served up an ace to give Meredith a lift, but Mary Washington recovered the point on the next play. Meredith tallied three notes thanks to a trio of unforced UMW errors to pull to within three, but the Eagles regrouped and cruised to a set victory.

Meredith held an 11-10 lead in the third set on back-to-back kills from Hendricks, but the Eagles scored five consecutive winners to jump ahead once again. The Avenging Angels would not put together consecutive winners the rest of the way.

In the Angels' final match of the weekend, Meredith jumped out to a seven point lead at 11-4 with kills spread throughout the front line. The Eagles remained in the mix, but a pair of winners from Hendricks followed by a kill from Agiunaldo and Sarah Brandon kept MCVB out front. Meredith maintained control for the win.

Bridgewater fought back in th second, but the Avenging Angels continued to attack. Meredith finished off the Eagles and held on for a sweep in the third to capture their first win of the invitational.

Meredith travels to Salem, Virginia, next weekend for the Roanoke Invitational. The Angels open the weekend with Virigina Wesleyan and the host Maroons on Friday, Sept. 11.
