Box Score DANVILLE, Va. -- A game-tying goal in the 85th minute, followed by a golden goal in double overtime helped the Meredith College soccer team pick up a win in its USA South opener against Averett on Saturday afternoon.
The Avenging Angels rallied for two unanswered goals to move to 3-2 on the season and start out league play at 1-0, while the Cougars drop to 2-3-1 on the year behind an 0-1 mark in conference action.
The Cougars got on the board first early in the second half, but the Avenging Angels actually had the first chance of the day after earning a penalty kick in the sixth minute of the game that was stopped. Regardless, Averett held on to a 1-0 lead through a majority of the second half.
in the 85th minute, Claire-Emma Britt collected a rebound and scored to tie the game at 1-1. The total held through to the end of regulation and forced overtime.
The first overtime period came and went without a score and just as the contest was nearing the end, a header from Morgan Thomas off the foot of Madeline Ostrowski secured a second straight victory for Meredith.
Averett outshot the visitors 18-13, but Meredith held a 5-1 advantage in shots in extra time. The Cougars also held a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
Miranda Lutz stopped seven of the eight shots that came her way, while Morgann Dills pushed aside seven shots in the loss.
The Avenging Angels return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 28, with a home contest against N.C. Wesleyan beginning at 7 pm.
