Soccer Finishes in a 1-1 Draw with Eagles

Box Score

RALEIGH, N.C. - In Saturday's final non-conference pairing of the season, the Meredith College soccer team finished in a 1-1 draw versus the visiting University of Mary Washington. The Eagles reached the D3soccer.com Top-25 ranking earlier this week at No. 23.

Avenging Angel Megan Amanatides scored first in today's battle on the field. On a strong throw-in from Brittany Millice, Megan Amanatides found the ball on a foot tap from Sarah Varnell to drill the ball into the right corner of the net for the first score of the day. The first half goal in the 42nd minute sent the Angels into the team room with a 1-0 lead at the break.

Meredith defended six Eagle attempts at the net throughout the second period. But with just 19 seconds left in regulation, UMW's Michelle Gibbons looped one over Jaisa Loch's outstretched hands to tie the match.

Each goalie tallied three stops in one-of-two overtime periods to hold both teams scoreless through the final 20 minutes of play.

Loch recorded nine saves in her first collegiate draw, and Mary Washington's Sara Armor tallied seven.

The Avenging Angels head to Montgomery, Alabama, next weekend for a Noon (CST) matchup with Huntingdon to open the USA South Conference season. The team caps off the weekend at LaGrange Sunday. Meredith defeated both teams at home last season.
