Box Score 2 After a one-day break, the Meredith softball team was back on the field this morning with two games slated in their final day of The Spring Games in Leesburg, FL.
Game 1 – Meredith 4, Ripon 1
In the first game of the day, Meredith took on the Ripon College Red Hawks. In the bottom of the first inning, Sarah Manis reached on a bunt single, and then stole to put her in scoring position. Madison Hamilton walked and Alyssa Drake, who came into this game hitting .500 for the tournament, ripped a single down the third base line. Manis scored, putting the Angels' first run on the board. The action continued in the first when Fallon Wimberly put a sacrifice fly into center field advancing both Hamilton and Drake. The Angels were able to drive in two more runs off Savannah Talley's shot to left field, closing out the first with the Angels up 3-0.
The Red Hawks rallied back in the second when a field error coupled with a single up the middle put runners in scoring position. Ripon's catcher, Lexzie Hassemer doubled to right center to drive in a run. However, strong defense by Meredith created a run down between third base and home plate resulting in the Red Hawks final out of the inning.
Meredith was able to score another run in the bottom of the third off Fallon Wimberly's shot to right field, which scored Anna Goldman. The remainder of the game was a defensive battle between the teams. Avenging Angel pitcher, Hannah Wiegle, threw a complete game not allowing any earned runs.
Game 2 – Meredith 11, FDU-Florham 0
The Avenging Angels softball team closed out The Spring Games with a strong 11-0 win over the Devils of FDU-Florham. For the second time this week, pitcher Sarah Gundlach dominated from the circle. Gundlach pitched the entire game, striking out 12 batters and allowing just four hits.
The Angels' offense jumped on the scoreboard quickly with three runs in the first inning. With several runners on base, an untimely error by the Devils allowed two runs to score and left another on base. Freshman Jessie Woller roped a double driving in one more run.
Meredith's bats were quiet until the top of the fourth, when Jessie Woller connected for her second double of the day. With one out and two runners on base, senior Emily Velazquez stepped up to the plate hitting a solid shot allowing Woller to score. Once back in the field, Gundlach secured all three outs catching a pop-up for the first and striking out the next two. The Angels closed out the inning with a 4-0 lead over the Devils.
In both the fifth and sixth innings, the Angels scored one run, which included RBI's by Susanne Taylor and Anna Goldman.
A FDU-Florham pitching change in the seventh resulted in the three walks and a stolen base to start the inning. With bases loaded, the Angels went on a scoring run that resulted in four Meredith players earning RBIs. Gundlach closed out the game by striking out the Devil's last two batters.
Anna Goldman went 4-for-4 with a double and 2 RBIs, while Jessie Woller went 3-for-3 with 2 doubles and an RBI.
Meredith softball concludes their time in Florida with a 5-1 tournament record, bringing the overall record to 9-3. The Avenging Angels will be in Georgia this weekend for a double header against the LaGrange College Panthers.
